He tells his mother that he is not a child anymore and will make his own decisions. He tells her that he would have come back even if Mary hadn't telephoned him, and also that his mother doesn't know that they ended their relationship, and Edith says they have. After Edith receives word that Michael is dead, she decides to leave Downton Abbey while her family are at the races (except for Tom, whom she says goodbye to before she leaves but does not explain where or why she is going). Mary claimed she thought Bertie already knew but Edith knows a scheme when she smells one and gives Mary the dressing down she deserves. They then kiss without worry of being seen in the restaurant.
